Kindergarten Lesson Fast and Slow

Good morning! I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Today we are going to be listening and singing using the fast and slow sounds. We will be using our scarves to pretend to be a turtle and a hare. When we are pretending to be a hare, we will move our scarves around REALLY fast! When we are pretending to be a turtle, we will move our scarves around SLOWLY.

Materials: You will need a scarf(long sock, tie, towel, anything you can wave around).

  1. Today we are learning about fast songs and slow songs. First, let’s run around in a circle FAST!!! Now, say your name, really fast! Take your scarf and wave it around quickly! Which animal moves around really fast? That’s right! The hare!

  1. Now we are going to move around in a circle SLOWLY. Now say your name, slowly. Take your scarf and wave it around slowly! Which animal moves around really slowly? Yes! The turtle!

  1. Let’s go for a walk around your house and see if we can spot some things that are moving quickly and some things that are moving slowly. First, let’s take a look at a ceiling or floor fan. Does it move quickly or slowly? Wave your scarf around like a hare if it is fast and like a turtle if it is slow.

  1. Look for a person in your house. Are they walking slowly or quickly? Move your scarf around like a hare if they are moving quickly and like a turtle if they are moving slowly!

  1. Let’s listen to some songs. Some are fast and some are slow. You are going to wave your scarf around quickly if you hear a song that sounds fast! You are going to wave your scarf around slowly if you hear a song that is slow. Here is your first song!

  1. This song is called Flight of the Bumblebee. I want you to listen to this song, it sounds like a bee buzzing and flying around. Is this a fast song, or a slow song? I will put these questions below for you to answer! Wave your scarf around quickly if this song is fast, and slowly if it is slow!

Is this a fast song or a slow song?

                   Your answer:

7. This next one is called the Maple Leaf Rag. Listen to it for a moment, then wave your scarf around! Is this a fast song or a slow song?

Is this a fast song or a slow song?

                   Your answer:

  1. We are going to do one more. This is called Canon in D. Listen to this one for a moment, then wave your scarf around! Is this a fast song or a slow song?

Is this a fast song or a slow song?

                  Your answer:

Please answer the questions above and have your parent email the answers to me at [email protected]. Thank you!

Kindergarten Grade Lesson on Long and Short Sounds

Good morning! Today we are going to learn about long sounds and short sounds! Some sounds are fast! We call these short sounds. Other sounds are slower sounds. We would say these are long sounds.

Materials: You will need a piece of paper and a crayon/pencil.

Let’s say your name. Say it quickly! That is a short sound. Now we are going to say the word Yes! Say it one more time, really fast! These are short sounds!

Now let’s say your name one more time, but this time, we are going to say it SLOWLY and take a long time to say it. This is a long sound. Say the word “Nooooooooooo.” Is this a long word or a short word? Yes! It is a long word!

We are going to pretend to go to the farm today and discover the animals that make both long and short sounds. But before we go, we have to make the fence for the animals.

  1. Take out your piece of paper.

  2. Fold it in half

  3. Draw an enclosed fence on each half of the paper. We will put different animals in each pasture.

  4. Designate one half of the paper to be your long sounds and the other half be the short sounds.

Now let’s go to the farm! We are going to draw the animals that make a short sound in the short sound fence. The animals that make a long sound are going in the long sound fence.

  1. First we are going to be greeted by a dog barking! Can you bark like a dog? Try it! Is it a long sound, or a short sound? Yes! A dog makes a short sound when it barks at your arrival! Let’s draw a dog in the short sounds pasture.

  1. Now let’s go see the cows. We hear a cow mooing. Can you moo like a cow? Is this a long sound or a short sound? Great! A cow mooing is a long sound! We will draw the cow in the long sounds pasture.

  1. There are sheep next to the cows. Can you baa like a sheep? Is this a long sound or a short sound? Yes! This is a long sound! Can you draw a sheep in the long sounds pasture?

  1. Around the corner from the pigs, we see a pond full of ducks! Can you quack like a duck? Is that a long sound or a short sound? Excellent! That is a short sound! We will draw a duck in the short sounds pasture.

Please have your parents take a picture of your animal long and short sounds pasture. You can email it to [email protected]

Kindergarten will be learning about different kinds of voices. If you need any extra help, check out my video lesson!

1. We are going to look at four different kinds of voices.

          A. First, there is our “whispering” voice. Can you whisper your name? Can you whisper your pet’s name? Let’s pretend to be a butterfly and whisper the word “butterfly”.

          B. Next, we will use our “singing” voice. Can you sing your name? Can you sing your pet’s name? Let ‘s pretend to be a bird and sing the word “bird”.

          C. Let’s do “speaking” next. Just speak normally. Can you say your name? Can you say your pet’s name? Let’s pretend to be a cat and say the word “cat”.

          D. Finally, we will be “calling” next. Calling out is the loudest of the four voices. Can you call your name? Can you call your pet’s name? Let’s pretend to be a dog and call out the word, “dog”.

2. Did you notice how each time it got a little louder, even though we were changing our voices? Let’s try it one more time:

          A. Bend down and touch your toes while you whisper the word “butterfly”.

          B. Hold your arms out while you sing the word “bird”.

          C. Spin around while you speak the word “cat”.

          D. Jump up while you call out the word “dog”.

3.  It is “opposites” time! It is time to get your paper!

          A. We are going to fold your paper in half from top to bottom.

          B. Now we are going to unfold what we just did, and then fold it the other way, from side-to-side.You should have four squares! We are going to put the opposites in each box.

          C.  The top, left hand box is the first box. You can draw a butterfly in it for “whispering”. Can you whisper how you are drawing your butterfly?

          D. Which voice do you think is the opposite of whispering? Right! It is “calling”! Draw a picture of a dog in the next box (top right hand box)! Call out how you are drawing your dog as you draw it!

          E. The bottom left box is the next one. We are going to draw the cat for “speaking” in this box. Can you speak how you are drawing your cat?

          F. Which voice is the opposite of “speaking”? You are right! It is “singing”! In the bottom right box, you can draw a picture of a bird for singing!

5. Please have your parent take a picture of your “opposites page” and email the picture to me. Remember you can email me at [email protected]. Have a good day!

Kindergarten will be learning about high and low sounds around the house!  If you need any extra help, check out my video lesson!

(3 mins) Part I: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OpI6myOFS04H3L-itbvONvtE36cegGvl/view

(~2mins) Part II: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iZ2gxFn52f9W4YFqVXuGMOXOOJKybv5u/view

Good morning! I hope you had a great weekend! On this rainy day, we are learning about analyzing sounds around the house. You are going to need to get your listening ears on!

Materials: You will need a piece of paper and a pencil and good listening ears. :)

Today we are learning about analyzing sounds around the house. You are going to need to get your listening ears on! We are going to pretend to be a detective. We are going to look around the house and find different sounds. Then we are going to listen to the sounds and see if we can tell if they are high sounds, or low sounds.

1. First of all, what are high sounds and low sounds? We will go into more depth about them next time, but for now, here are some “high” and “low” sounds

     A. A bearing growling is a low sound. Can you growl like a bear?

     B. A mouse squeaking is a high sound. Can you squeak like a mouse?

     C. A lion roaring is a low sound. Can you roar like a lion?

     D. A bird whistling is a high sound. Can you whistle like a bird?

2. Now we are going to take our piece of paper and fold it in half.

     A. The top half of the paper is going to record our high notes. You can draw an arrow pointing “up” on it if you like!

B.The bottom half of the paper will record our low notes. You can draw an arrow pointing “down” so you know this is where the low notes go.

3. It is time to look for clues! Let’s scout around your house and search for sounds! I will give you some ideas of places to look, but you can look for others as well.

      A. Let’s start in the kitchen. Do you hear any sounds? Check the refrigerator and see if it makes a humming noise. Now turn to your paper. Draw a picture of the fridge and then write an arrow pointing “up” if it is a high humming noise, or an arrow pointing “down” if it is a lower humming noise.

     B. While we are in the kitchen, does someone make tea on the stove in your house? Can you listen to a tea kettle whistle? Draw a picture of the fridge and then write an arrow pointing “up” if it is a high humming noise, or an arrow pointing “down” if it is a lower humming noise.

     C. Now walk to your bedroom, listening for sounds along the way! Do you have any toys that make noises? Play them and listen to the sounds. Add the toy to your list and mark if it is a “high” sound or a “low” sound on your paper.

     D. It is time to go to the bathroom. Turn on the faucet in the sink and listen to the pitch of the water. Add water to your list and mark if it is a “high” sound or a “low” sound on your paper.

     E. Let’s do one more. Ask one of your parents to play the ringer on their phone. Draw a phone on your paper and mark if it is a “high” sound or a “low” sound on your paper.

 4. Now have one of your parents take a picture of your paper and send me an email.

Kindergarten will be learning about Dynamics Listening and Clapping with Carnival of the Animals: The Flamingo

Good morning! I hope you had a great weekend! On this rainy day, we are going to watch and listen to one of the songs from a musical suite called The Carnival of the Animals. The song we are going to focus on is the Flamingo song!

  1. Stand up and put your hands on your hips. Your arms are going to be your wings! Now stand on one leg-we are going to pretend to be flamingoes! Listen to this short clip of flamingos, aren’t they loud???

  2. Now you can stand or sit for this next part. Try clapping in a steady beat and count with me for 4 times. One, Two, Three, Four! One, Two, Three, Four! Keep practicing until you can clap the beat evenly

    3. Now we are going to listen to the flamingo song. Before you listen, I want you to listen for a few things. Does the song get louder? I want you to hold your hands out in front of you. When the song gets louder, I want you to put your hands up! When the song gets quieter, I want you to put your hands down.

    4. Let’s pretend to be flamingos once more-stand on one leg with your wings spread out this time! Flap your wings and pretend like you are landing in the water!

    5. Now we are going to listen to the flamingo song again! This time, when we play the song, I want you to clap your wings along with the song. When you hear the first notes of the song, try to clap along! See if you can clap evenly through the entire song! If you get tired of clapping, try flapping your wings to the beat!

  1. Finally, let’s bow like the dancing flamingos in the song! Raise your wings and take a bow! Send me an email letting me know that you have completed the assignment and what you liked the best! Keep working on your Flag Day Songs in the song of the week section!

Kindergarten will be learning about Grandparents' Day this week!

I hope this is an opportunity for you to feel close to your grandparent or older adult during this time of social distancing! For today’s lesson you are going to interview your grandparent (or older friend of the family/family member) to learn about the music from their past!!  Materials: You will need a pencil, a piece of paper, a parent, and a grandparent or older friend of the family/family member)

1. Choose your favorite song from your play this year (maybe Shaggy, Smelly Sheep?) to sing to your grandparent. If you feel too nervous to sing, you can just tell them the song.

2. Call or do a zoom chat with your grandparent.

          A. First, tell your grandparent that you are interviewing them for music class!

          B. Tell them your favorite song from your play, and if you feel comfortable, sing it to them!

          C. Ask your grandparent: what was their favorite song to listen to when they were growing up.

          D. Sing a song you know together-like “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, or a favorite song that you both know.

          E. Make sure you tell them: thank you for their time!

3. Now, go to your phone/computer and look up the song on youtube with an adult’s help.

4. You can answer yes or no to the following questions:

                 A. Did you know either the song that your grandparent told you about?

                 B. Listen to the song on youtube. Did you like it? Does it sound different than from what you are used to?

Kindergarten is painting by sound and discovering emotions in music today! Materials: You will need a paint brush, green, red, blue, and yellow paint, and four pieces of paper.  ***Note to parents, some of the songs below are quite long, you don't need to listen to the whole thing! Just enough to get an idea of the emotion of the song***

Sounds in music can make us feel different emotions. Music can make us feel scared, happy, angry, and thoughtful.

1. Let's listen to a few songs:

                 A. Listen to this song. (Beethoven's 5th) What emotion do you hear in this song? This song sounds angry!

                 B. Now listen to this song. (Vivaldi's Spring) What emotion do you hear in this song? This sound sounds happy.

                 C. Finally, let's listen to this song. (Mozart's Requiem Mass) What emotion do you hear in this song? This song sounds sad.

2. Let's put our four paint colors on the table.

                  A. Look at the red paint. What emotion do you think of when you see the color red? Yes! Red makes us think of being angry.

                  B. Look at the yellow paint. What emotion do you think of when you see the color yellow? Yes! Yellow makes us think of being happy!

                  C. Look at the green paint. What emotion do you think of when you see the color green? Yes! Green makes us think of being glad.

                  D. Look at the blue paint. What emotion do you think of when you see the color blue? Yes! Blue makes us think of being sad.

3. Now let's get out our paint and paper. We are going to use our paintbrushes to drum on the paper while we listen to the songs again. This time, I want you to use the paint color that matches the emotion in the song. So if the song sounds angry, you can drum with your paint onto your paper. If the song sounds happy or glad, you can drum green or yellow paint onto your paper. If the song sounds sad or scary, you can drum blue paint onto your page.

                     A. Listen to this song. What emotion do you hear in this song? This song sounds angry!

                     B. Now listen to this song. What emotion do you hear in this song? This sound sounds happy.

                     C.  Let's listen to this song. What emotion do you hear in this song? This song sounds sad.

4. Now let's see what you learned! Using any paint color you would like, listen to the following song. (Grieg in the Hall of the Mountain King) Use the paint colors that you think describe the emotions in the song.

5. Take a picture of your work and email it to me when you are done @ [email protected]. I can't wait to see your work!

2nd Grade will be creating a music scale with Easter eggs! You will need a sharpie, and 8 plastic Easter eggs.

1. First, take your first egg and write "C" on the top half and "Do" on the bottom half.

     A. Take the second egg and write "D" on the top half and "Re" on the bottom half.

     B. Take the third egg and write "E" on the top half and "Mi" on the bottom half.

     C. On the fourth egg write "F" on the top half and "Fa" on the bottom half.

     D. On the fifth egg write "G" on the top half and "Sol" on the bottom half.

     E. On the sixth egg write "A" on the top half and "La" on the bottom half.

     F. On the seventh egg write "B" on the top half and "Ti" on the bottom half.

     G. On the eighth egg write "high C" on the top half and "Do" on the bottom half.

2. Next, listen to this song: "Do, a Deer" from the Sound of Music.

3. Each music note is represented by a different letter. The scale above is a "C" scale. We can tell (for now) because it starts with the letter "C".

     A. Each syllable (do, re, mi, etc.) corresponds to the name of a note(C, D, E, etc.).

     B. For example, "Do" is going to be the letter "C", "Mi" is going to be "D" and so on.

4. Put the eggs this order: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, High C. Then, put the bottom half of the eggs underneath in this order: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do.

     A. Point to each note and sing the scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C). Then, sing the solfege while pointing to each egg (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do)

     B. Repeat 3 times.

5. Now it is time to scramble your eggs! Mix up the tops and the bottoms thoroughly! Try to put the scale in order C to high C, with the correct solfege (Do, Re, Mi) in order below! Keep trying until you can get them in order.

6. Finally, take out a piece of paper and write out the scale from memory, from C to High C and write the corresponding solfege below each note. You can also do this on a google doc and share it with me.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade are going to be making Easter Egg maracas and learning rhythm patterns!

1. Take some plastic easter eggs and fill 1/3 of the way with rice, beans, or something small.

2. If it shuts without popping open, go ahead and close it. If it might open, you can take some scotch tape and tape the egg around the middle.

3. Sit with your parent and use your egg maracas to shake out each beat.

    A. Shake your eggs to the phrase "Easter bunny" (4 quick shakes: Ea*Shake* Ster *Shake* Bun *shake* Ny *Shake*)

    B. Now shake your eggs to the phrase "Little Easter Chick" (4 quick shakes and a long one at the end: Lit * Tle* Ea* Ster* Chick *

C.The next one is "Big Easter Egg" (One long, two quick, and another long: Big* Ea* Ster* Egg*)

Classwork for the week of March 30th through April 2nd. I encourage you to try to complete

the week's lesson each week if possible. Please email me @ [email protected] if you

have any questions!

All Grades, please FIRST go to my classroom page on the song for the week. Listen to the song three times, listening and humming along the first time, singing it quietly the second time, and loudly the third time. There are lyrics and a link included. : )

4th and 5th Grade can finish the second half of their assignment, found on my google classroom. Please make sure you turn it back in to me. :) They will need to sign in to google classrooms here. If you are having difficulties, please reach out and I will help you out!

To sign in: When you sign in to google classrooms, on the top right hand corner of the page will be a plus sign. When you click on the plus sign, you will get an option to join a class. You will need to click on that one and then it will ask for my individual class code. My class codes are:

4th Grade Access Code is umofl4q

5th Grade Access Code is bsxujeq

3rd and 2nd Grade will be making a water xylophone! You will need a metal spoon, water, measuring cups, and 5 glass jars of the same type and height, as well as a piece of paper and a pencil. This could be baby food jars, mason jars, water glasses, etc. The straighter the sides the better, but not necessary. If you would like to add an extra level of fun, you can add food coloring to each jar to show the different notes!

1. Put your jars in a row.

2. Fill the first jar with 1/2 a cup of water

3. Fill the second jar with 1 cup

4. Fill the third with 1 and 1/2 cups

5. Fill the fourth with 2 cups

6. Fill the fifth with 2 and 1/2 cups

6.B If you would like to, and have it, you can add in food coloring! (Not necessary to the project, but still fun!)

(NOTE! If you are using a smaller jar, or even one that is much larger, you can adjust the amounts to make sure the water fits in your jar. If using baby jars, try beginning with 1/4 or even 1/8 cup and go up slowly in even increments)

7. Now it is time to guess! Write down if you think the glass that has the MOST amount of water in it will have the highest note or the lowest note. Write down if you think the glass with the LOWEST amount of water in it will have the highest or lowest note.

8. Take your spoon (or a xylophone mallet if you have it!) and gently tap the first glass, listening for the tone of the note. Then play all the different glasses.

9. Compare each glass and listen for the glass with the highest note. Please write it down. Then, listen for the glass with the lowest note. Please write down which glass has the lowest note.

The science of sound is all about vibrations. When you hit the bottle with the spoon, the glass vibrates, and it’s these vibrations that ultimately make the sound. You discovered that tapping an empty bottle produced a higher-pitched sound than tapping a bottle full of water did. Adding water to the bottle dampens the vibrations created by striking the glass with a spoon. The less water in the bottle, the faster the glass vibrates and the higher the pitch. The more water you add to the bottle, the slower the glass vibrates, creating a lower pitch.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade will be creating a sound song this week! You will need a piece of paper and either crayons or markers. Here is a link with a few examples. The first thing you will need to do is:

1. Fold your paper in half

2. Draw two boxes, one on each half. Each box should just about fill each side.

3. Divide the top half box into four equal sections and do the same to the bottom half box.

4. In the BOTTOM section will be your "answer" key. Choose four different sound movements and assign each of them a different shape.

For example, I am going to choose a star for clapping, a circle for stomping, a triangle for snapping, and a square for tapping a basket. In the box, I will draw a star and write the word clap(so I don't forget!). And do the same for the other three boxes. You can choose whichever you like! This is so we don't forget what different sounds we have chosen. You can use these or choose your own! Other ideas are shuffling, whistling, singing, shouting, swaying, using an instrument, etc.

5. In the TOP section will be your song sounds! There are four sections, so we are going to do four different patterns!

For example, Box A. could be Star, Star, Triangle, Circle. Box B. could be Square, Square, Triangle, Star.

6. Play all four of your boxes once you are done filling them out!

7. Please keep your paper and turn it in when we return to school.

3rd and 2nd Grade, last week we learned about the orchestra, watch this video to review from last week. :)

2. This week we will be learning about composing music for yourself! Go to this website and push the American Flag button on the far left and the piano button (also on the far left. ) You can also use your own instrument at home! Go ahead and play the following notes:
C C G G A A G      (OR Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol)

F F E E D D C      (OR Fa Fa Mi Mi Re Re Do)

Can you guess the tune? It actually is the tune to two popular songs, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and the ABC's!

3. Now it is your turn! Using this keyboard, and also using ONLY the notes C, E, G, and the high C, please compose your own song. It can be as long or as short as you like, in whatever order you would like, as long as it is NO shorter than 5 notes. Take out a piece of paper and make sure your name is at the top. Write down the notes to your song in the correct order. Feel free to record your self  playing the song on the website above, or on your own instrument at home! If you don't have a way to record it, feel free to wait until we get to school to perform it to me. Turn in the paper when we get back to school.

4, Activity: Feel free to play with the animal noises on the website and making a silly song with the different animals. Try the tune above in different animal voices!

1st Grade and Kindergarten, last week we talked about percussion instruments, which finishes up our unit on the orchestra! This week we will learn about learning dynamics, which is the word we use to describe loud and soft sounds in music!

1. Listen to this video. Use your hands and clap along with the video!  First, clap along LOUDLY.  Then, clap along quietly. We are going to listen to the song If you're happy and you know it! Sing it loudly the first time and quietly the second time.

2. When we are singing loudly, we call it forte! Can you say forte LOUDLY? When we are singing softly, we call it piano. Can you say piano quietly? Can you stop your feet loudly? Recite the word FORTE with each stomp! Now, can you stomp quietly? Can you say piano quietly with each stomp? Next, we are going to say the word hello! Can you say HELLO loudly? Can you say it FORTE? Now, can you say hello quietly? Can you say it piano?

3. Go into your kitchen and get out two spoons and a plastic cup. First, we are going to hit the spoons together. Can you hit them together loudly? Can you tell your parent FORTE each time? Now, can you grab your cup? Turn your cup upside down. Gently hit the cup against the table so it does a light sound. Can you whisper piano each time you hit the table?

4. Finally, ask for help to get out a piece of paper and some crayons. Can you draw a picture of a cow mooing loudly, or FORTE? Now, can you draw a picture of a quiet bunny whispering quietly, or piano? Save your picture and turn it in when you return to school!

Classwork for the week of March 16th through the 20th. Please email me @ [email protected] if you have any questions!

All Grades, please FIRST go to my classroom page on the song for the week. Listen to the song three times. Just listen the first time, sing it quietly the second time, and loudly the third time. There are lyrics and a link included. : )

4th and 5th Grade will need to research a composer using Classics for Kids website. You can choose any composer on the website, and please give at least 5 sentences. You can talk about his life, his style of music, what musical time period he is born in, or name some of his most famous pieces of music. You can turn it in when we return to school.

Please choose one of his songs and use the clip provided on the website to listen to the song. A lot of the music is themed, so for example, on Edvard Grieg's page, there is a option for a Halloween-themed music. Listen to the music and describe the music on paper. Please use terms like adante or allergo, major or minor, and forte or piano to describe the music. Be sure to include the name/names of the song!

3rd and 2nd Grade can explore the orchestra page on Classics for Kids website. On this page, they will click on the orchestra. The orchestra is divided into 4 main instrument families. When you click on the different sections, it will talk about each group and you will hear JUST those instruments. Click on the conductor last and hear all the instruments play together!

Now get out a piece of paper and choose an instrument from the orchestra and write three things about the instrument: 1. Which instrument family does it belong to? 2. How does it make its sound? (Is it wind, strings, or do you hit or shake it?) 3. Name 2-3 other instruments that belong to the same family.

Flip your paper over and draw the orchestra sections. You can use the picture from the same classics for kids website. You can draw boxes and write in strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, etc., instead of each individual instrument.

1st and Kindergarten, get ready to explore the inside of your house! First, watch this youtube video on percussion instruments, and then, go inside your house and try to find three household items that can also be a percussion instrument. It could be a pot with wooden spoons, like a drum, a box or two of rice or pasta, like a maraca, or two pot lids, like the cymbals. Use your imagination! Try to play it along with the song of the week!

Then, (put your name at the top of your page) and draw a picture of your favorite percussion instrument you found in your house. Please turn it in when we return to school.
